Diary is a novel about a woman who failed to be an artist, and how art still affects her life afterwards even when she's given up. The novel was written by the ever so brilliant Palahniuk (author of Fight Club), therefore it was one of the most powerful books I ever read.

As an artist, this book hit me hard- Palahniuk's words oblierated the very fabrication of my hope and confidence. His words, his story scared the shit out of me. He didn't bs the readers, because in reality, pursuing art is the equivalent of gambling with your life: you make it out, or you don't.

But then, as I read along and reached the end, I felt more ambitious than ever. I also feel stronger about not caring about money. I can't stand the idea of doing art for just money. I don't feel incredulous towards that idea- I feel outraged (for more reasons than one).

Most importantly, Diary taught me that you have to suffer. You have to fail, you have to cry, you have to be miserable when the time comes, because you can't have inspiration without suffering, and you can't have art without inspiration.

Diary helps artists to find the "self". It also shows you whether or not you're truly devoted, ambitious, and willing to suffer to make art work, because if you don't have devotion, ambition, and will to suffer...Hell, you won't get where you want to go.
